Wonderful Week of seed planting, animating and eco thoughts

This week has been wonderful!

We've been working on our art for the Dandy exhibit in April.

The art topics such as conscious consumerism, water conservation, deforestation, urban sprawl and many other important issues have brought up many questions and lots of thought on how to make art based on these ideas. They've been doing a wonderful job and I am so proud of how thoughtful and how committed they are to this project.

Ms. Maria taught a class on flowers, parts of flowers, planting flowers and honoring them. The children then decorated cups to put their seeds in and we are now sprouting Mongolian Giant Sunflowers in our window. The children have each given names to the flowers and Bob, Sunny and all the rest are safely resting and rising at the forest. Signs were made that state, "Be Mindful of the Mongolian Giant Sunflowers", that way other community that use the building will now how precious each of these seeds are.

Mr. Travis came as well as Thor, Thomas Thorspecken (local urban sketchartist) to the forest. I was so happy to see Thor as I had spoke to him about coming to the forest to "sketch" the kids and pick up on their amazing creativity. Travis and I worked with the kids in beginning their animation work from storyboard. Lots of work but this project is going to be amazing. I've had people dream of the results of it, literally. Quite wonderful for this to be part of the community. We are missing lots of friends who would stop by and poke their head in. If you are around town and you want a little Misty love stop by for an amazing time!!!!

Is it too late for a happy 2010?

It's never too late to be happy, just a little too late posting the blog...

We've been busy bees the month of January getting back into the swing of things.....
We've already had a session of classes, a very creative session that is.
We animated, recorded voice overs and learned how to draw caricatures.
The final result from all this creativity is...a movie.
It's not feature length and it's not owned by Pixar but it's ours and we are so proud of it.
It's in the works and we'll keep you updated on when the premiere will be!

In other news. . .

Can you feel the love?

We can! You can actually see the love when you pull up to Misty Forest.
We've decorated the window with old architectural paper, tea bags and company stationary. An entirely recycled window display we are proud to say.
Our theme for the month is Love Thyself & Everyone Else!
Monthly we are now focused on an object of the month to base lessons and art on.
This month our object is tea, we are learning all about it and we've been using tea and tea parts in some very creative ways.

Edible Love

If you haven't heard of the local group DRIP you are missing out.
If you haven't heard of FRESH, Drips February event, well your "taste" buds will seek revenge.
Misty Forest is partnering with FRESH to bring a special Willy Wonka-like event to the Cameo theatre. Misty is offering complimentary childcare this Valentines weekend, February 13th and 14th for the FRESH special couples dinner events. One persons trash that should really be recycled and not end up in a landfill, is Misty Forests next art supplies!!!

Think about what you constantly consume...pickles, cereal, beer, soup, wine, applesauce...
What do you do with the containers, lids, corks and cans?
If you consume a large amount of the same thing how about dropping of its remnants to Misty?
It's easier to create canvases out of 20 cereal boxes than 2,
much better to have 15 milk jugs to make bird houses than 8,
life is wonderful when wehave 100 bottle caps to make recycled art windchimes, and
instead of collecting these things for a year to make one project, a one time or once
a month drop off from a local family makes our day!
So do your part, don't let the earth fart and watch us create fantastic art!!!!!!!!!!!!

Father Winter and Father Time Have Been Transpiring

That was fast!

There's only one week left before the holiday break and we haven't even hung the stockings!!!

During the month of November the kids created gratitude trees. The trees were part of the "gratitude forest" and visits were made every day to drop "gratitude acorns" on the trees. Every day the kids received a gratitude and now that the holidays are here we wanted to keep the tradition alive and hang stockings for receiving "gifts".

The stockings were created from red letterhead and company envelopes that were turned into places to receive words of kindness. The front of the envelope was glued to the "stocking" and the back of the envelope became the resting spot for sweet notes.

Since we are privledged to take full advantage of Dinosaur Bob, we decided to make a "fireplace" out of boxes, donated architect prints and toilet paper rolls. To take a sneak peek pictures will be posted next week of our fireplace and stockings.

There are some parents who have taken advantage of the communication system and slipped notes to their children and their childrens friends. One little forest elf in particular has implemented this system at home!!!!

Holiday Drive

We are working with Social Issues Inc who work directly with local homeless individuals, families and vets. I inquired on what the real need of the homeless community is.

Food, water, blankets, bags, clothes.

Social Issues Inc. delivers these things one on one to individuals so there are no facilities to help hold and assist with the givings.

So that means the collection of the items need to be more mindful.

Trish the founder, president and director of Social Issues Inc made a very direct and excellent point regarding collections.

The homeless don't have can openers and tools to assist in some of the things regularly donated to food banks.

Here is a list of things desired and required!!!

Bags

We are so lucky to be a part of an amazing community and it's no one's fault but our own if we don't take advantage.

Remember to stop by Aristree/Infusion Tea in College Park this Saturday. Artistree is an art co-op that features many talented aristisans and inspirations.

One of our very own parents, Ms. Hannah Braden will be featured as the Artist of the month. Her show begins at 7:00pm with live music! Oh and you know those cool coin necklaces you are seeing all over O-town, made by our very own lovely Ms. Angie Ramos? Yes, they are making themselves pretty at Artistree too. You can support Misty Forest families, local artists and the economy just by picking out something pretty for a loved one this holiday. ROCKIN I TELL YOU, ROCKIN!!!

Have fun with your little one this holiday. Make a day of it!!! After an afternoon at the forest, drop by Seven Sisters Coffee House for some yummy holiday cheer and head to Lake Eola for ice skating in the park!!!!

It's December!

How much turkey/tofurky did you have??!!!!

What did everyone feed the kids? Is it the turkey or tofurky that dulled them to this degree?
Yesterday I was worried I would have to start checking pulses.
The kids were stagnant, staring, almost serendaded to quiet. I thought where is he?
The pied piper?

I soon came to realization that they were just calm, happy and peaceful......was it because they've been stress free for 4 days and some celebrated 7 days of vacation? Maybe.

Keep The Peace Man!
Fortunately or unfortunately, for that matter I have first hand experience on how stressed out kids are daily. Homework, less creative time, less active time, more testing, more pressure....and now it's the holiday season.
With 18 days before the kids holiday season begins the holiday stresses and excitement will start building up. Sometimes the kids turn into little gremlins seeking the highest satisfaction and sugar-store fulfillment possible.
The magic, the "mistyical" and the wonderment of the season is so much more than decorations and candy canes. Historically it's a time to reflect on peace, togetherness, harmony, rebirth and new beginnings. Remember to keep the peace.

December Celebrations
There are so many traditions and celebrations in December we are taking advantage of them all.
The Forest will be studying, creating and elaborating on some of the amazing rituals people from around the world take part in this month.
This Sunday, December 6th is St. Nicholas day. The kids will see a short film today and I'm going to find out just how many kids are expecting gifts to be delivered to them on Saturday. Check out this website for more info:

Lift Off

Our new session has started and the kids are drummimg, posing, laughing, signing and dancing the whole way.

There has been lots of creativity occuring this month of November.

There is a specific group of children who are infatuated with all the nuts from the tree.

A "store" has now been developed called Nuts World. Get this, you can

purchase nuts with nuts. How nutty is that? Due to a poor business plan, I recommended Nut World to seek a financial advisor and Chet stepped up to the plate. So now playtime outside is a fully developed nut business. How AWESOME and creatively cool is that?

This past weekend was our market, Serendipity Square, where locals shopped for the holidays.

After Serendipity Square, the "Latern Fest" was held. The local German society celebrated

with a childrens parade of Lanterns.

Yesterday, was a first for the students at Misty Forest.

We saw our first shuttle launch at Misty Forest.

Hillcrest students had the opportunity to view the shuttle lift off, while

standing right in their own Misty Forest front yard.

We are lucky, we are grateful and we are continually happy and thankful to being sharing

our times with you because they are too special not to!!!!!!!

I have very personal feelings regarding this event due to its rarity. Being from up North I miss the extreme properties of continual art exhibition and cultural society. Thank goodness Orlando has found itself to be priceless in a community of growing artists and cultural influence, there are still holes and gaps that are likely to be filled soon. Until these things are growing like weeds I ask you to take part in this exhibit. It is something I would travel to New York to see but it's planted itself in our backyard. It's different, it's recycled, it's art, it's fitting and it's everything art should be and is. Do something for yourself and your local industry, support the Macabre Vignette Art exhibit at The Cameo Theatre, for a limited time.

Health, Halloween and Holiday Fun Day

We've been away from the blog for awhile.
It's been a very busy month.
There's been lots of homework, events, activities and a couple icky absenses from some sniffles and things.

Now that the month is ending so is our new session and classes begin again next week.
We are postponing our Cultural Fest to a later date. There hasn't been enough time to
prepare or there are so many amazing things the kids are learning they just can't stop.

FUN DAY

Tomorrow, Thursday, October 29 LECS will be getting out at noon.
Register online under the fun day tab if your child attends LECS and is planning on attending.

Friday, October 30 is a LECS/OCPS school holiday.
Join us for fun and Halloween celebration on this very special day off.
Hours are 8:00am - 6:00pm.
Registration is required.

Crocheting Coolness

Misty Forest's theme is "Where Self Esteem and Being Green Is Our Theme".

We are proud to be known for our themes, we feel that is what makes us special but there are so many more special things that Misty has to offer.Every day of the school week there is a special enrichment class that provides an opportunity to learn something new while being constructive and inspired too! The program reminds me of a place I used to love to visit when I was a little girl. It was an early american village that housed the community and their trades. The diverse trades included artistry, cooking, weaving, building, inventing and innovating. It was a taste of these specialities and necessities that early americans endured. Misty Forest has housed hundreds of diverse classes ranging anywhere from fencing to soap making. The kids have been able to experience many things that only occur as life experiences, especially social skills. So many of the lessons learned at the forest aren't taught at home or in the school system. It is so wonderful to see so many houses, teachers, artists, creators, talents, students, "lightbulb moments", creativity and greatness under one roof. This all leads to one of our students, Jayla. Jayla is sweet, a little shy, responsible and is always the monitor of the forest making sure everything is going as it should. Sometimes she is hesitant about trying new things and when we started our first crocheting class last week she was a bit frusterated and overwhelmed by the process of starting a new craft. Two days later........(yes, that's as long as some of it takes)......

by Friday she was a crocheting queen! She wanted to crochet for four hours straight. In fact the somewhat reserved girl said, "Miss Leah can you take a picture of me?". Wonderful, brilliant, fantastic, I thought. That is exactly the change we love to see! A photo, a smile, a new craft, what beauty life shows every day.

Fun Days are Fun!!!

Why is it that fun days are so much fun?

We had our first Fun Day of the year due to a Lake Eola Charter School holiday.It's a special kind of day because the kids get to bring things from home to play with. I knew it was going to be a good day when Whitney brought me a heart shaped banana nut muffin in the shape of the heart that read on the outside "Go Leah Go" in place of "Go Diego Go". Maddie and Griffin were of course armed with lots of "fun day" things. A bag of twister, books and Halloween activities were a special treat for the day. We took all of our window decorations down and decided to put up a handmade spider web. (The picture is of the reflection of our prior Halloween window on the wall)

The web is going to hold all the negativethoughts and sad things that may come to us and catches it before it's able to reach us.

There are several more fun days this month and we are having a special dress up Halloween fun day on October 30. If you are interested in attending a fun day don't forget to sign up online. It's as simple as a click.

1st Day of Nice Weather

Guess what we did?
We spent the entire day outside!!!
Snack and homework and everything in-between were savored in the beautiful Florida weather!
The day was 95% less chaotic than normal. No cleaning, no check in charts, no worrying about toys and books being put in their perfect place...it was sheer bliss.
We sat in rocking chairs, we ran about, we sang, we were perfectly happy.

"All over the future?" I asked.

Yesterday was wonderful, Alex came in for some vocal fun with the kids.
They had a wonderful time exercising the voice, all sorts of sounds were coming from the
meadow.

My kid quote for the day comes from Isis."Want to do something that will get your heart going?" Isis asked a child who took a break from picking up. "Pick up a broom and start cleaning up."

Schemes and things

So the scheming continues.....we weren't halfway off of school grounds when Izzy says, "So, you are the knight and we have to find people for the other parts and I'm the director..".
I knew the scheming and excitement had begun a new year of the kids initiating their own productions. I love when this happens because I don't have any part in it.
Not because I don't want to but because they have started this with their own creative energy.
Of course if production is the end result, costumes, scripts, sets and a bit of panicking is the part that I end up playing. Until then, it is an entire kids production and I just think that's so cool.

Eco High Five
Whitney took home the eco lesson from last EKO meetup. She told her Mom that putting bottles of stones in the toilet will help with water consumption.

Goal Get 'Em
Almost all the kids have goals at the forest that they are working on fulfilling, including myself.
Jayla completed one of her goals yesterday and we were so proud of her. She put a cork in it too! (see prior post if this seems odd)

Thrilling News
So the kids are learning Thriller, yes the MJ dance.
Since it's been the rage lately, Halloween is coming and it
would be just super nice for them to learn something old school,
they are doing the zombie dance.
Guess what else?
We are registering the kids for the Worldwide Simultaneous "Thriller" Dance, happening Saturday, October 24th.
If you would like your child to participate with us, your child is required to attend every Friday for the month of October (10.00 if you are just coming for the class), fill out a permission form and agree to escort your child to the event happening in downtown Orlando.

We can't wait to be zombified!

Fridays Are Fabulous

It's no secret that the kids are drowning in homework lately.

I've been trying to provide as many paddling boards as possible but it still seems as if

there can never be enough support.

That's why we looooooooooooooooove Fridays. No homework.

Fridays are fun days. Maddie and Griffin brought cupcakes to celebrate.

We were doing cartwheels, skipping and singing. We were for all intensive purposes being kids, including myself.

There's something amazing that happens when kids can be kids...

Creation happens!

Play happens!

Conversation happens!

Plain old fun happens!

Fun happens and learning happens all at the same time!

Learning about how to take care of plants, learning about remembering Dr. Seuss, learning that

we can communicate with eachother in a positive manner.

Friday Kid News:
The kids were so creative! Without my knowing they helped Chet remove his oh so aching tooth.
Even though I disapproved very lovingly regarding this event, I have to give them credit that they are quite creative, scheming and clever young beings. I had Chet illustrate, on an envelope that enclosed the tooth, how this tooth pulling scenario occurred. (see pic)
I had pictures by the handful drawn for me. I always come home with kid treats that I post on my fridge. The Vibe, event at the Cameo, was Friday and so many of our Misty kids showed up and had a wonderful time receiving henna, eating yummy vegan, looking at art, listening to music and seeing their community at work.

This new season brings thoughts of growth, fruition and gathering and we are here to harvest all the good things that are to come.

Our new fall session begins today and classes are posted.

We are so excited to start a new theme and we are gearing up for our fall presentation.

It's going to be different, cultural and it will all happen in pure Misty style.

Put a cork in it

Okay so we have to clarify the phrase "put a cork in it."

We've recently added a visual system of kindness performed at the forest.

There is the "Friend of the Forest" glass jar, "Kind action and Kind word" glass jar and "Eco Effort" glass jar. When an action is committed, such as cleaning a room without being asked, a cork is given to the child to put in the jar.

Yesterday I was catching myself saying, "put a cork in it" all day. I felt like I was in the Cinderella scene where all the birds pull everything together all at once. The kids were suddenly taking pride in their space. Phew...I've been trying to spread this message for 3 years now. They were so into it that at one point I had to say, "put the dustpan down."

Every day I see little buds of expansion occurring in the forest.

Today a broom and a lending hand created a simple and rewarding kind deed.

I knew it struck a chord to the kids when "Maddie-cakes" asked, "Miss Leah can I bring in Halloween decorations to decorate our forest?"

I couldn't have smiled big enough. I knew that she understood the fact that the forest wasn't for us, it was for her. I am so grateful to share these seeds of growth and inspiration. I see it happen every day and I think everyone should learn about the good things that are happening, because there are millions of them.

Sam brought out a broken spoon, 2 buttons, a wooden block, a drum and a mickey mouse hat.

He said to me, "Miss Leah do you want to see what I can make with all of this stuff?"

"Wow," I said. : )

We've missed you!!!!!!!!!

We've been more action-oriented than archive-oriented.
We want to be more pro-active with our blog.....so we are going to have the coolest blog ever!
There have been so many unbelievable things at Misty Forest that have gone down I'd have to start a newly themed blog just to catch you up.

Happy 2009! 2008 has brought us lots of opportunities, growth, light, obstacles and happiness. We are so happy to be moving into 2009 inspired with new classes, teachers and students.

Misty Forest wanted to give Ruby a birthday shout out.
Ruby is a long time member of Misty Forest and is a very special part of our family.
She sang at Dandelion during Rock Band class, is always rockin in the coolest get up and has the kindest eyes and sweetest spirit you could ever know.
Ruby chose to spend her birthday at Misty Forest. When Ruby was asked by her parents want she wanted to do on her birthday, Ruby told them she wanted to spend the afternoon at Misty Forest. She brought cup cakes and all.
Ruby we are so happy to celebrate your 6th year of life with you and we are so grateful you shared your special day with us. You rock little Miss Ruby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No School or Misty Forest Today Thanks To Fay

An extra student of large proportions has made her appearance and the final curtain should draw soon. Until so MISTY FOREST afterschool program is CLOSED on Friday, August 22nd.
We all may be singing Fay, Fay Blow Away Don't Come Back Another Day but Misty Forest has given Fay a wonderful podium to be a teaching point the first week of school.

We had a wonderful week and our theme of belonging has followed us throughout the week.
We had great conversations this week about how Ms. Fay has effected our feeling of belonging and how and why she belongs to the earth.

Questions were posed during activities such as:

When have you felt like you didn't belong to something?
When do you really feel like you belong?
What do we use and throw away everyday that doesn't belong to the earth?
What can you create from those things to create something beautiful that belongs to you?

We even took a visualization adventure to the Land of Belonging and visited what belongs to us and what we feel is missing.

What a great start to the week that some felt they may be missing a lot of school or play time but others found it to be a way to look at things differently!!!!!!!

We are looking forward to next weeks classes such as Intro to Photography, Rain Barrel Decoration and Setting Your Foundation.

Yes, we are following Orange County School Closure. We will let you know if Wednesday there will be closure as well. Keep posted, hang tight and play a game, read a book and hug your loved ones.

First Day of Our Afterschool Program 2008-2009

It's the first day of our afterschool program. We did our first pick up at New School and when Lake Eola Charter opens we will do our first day of pick up with them!
We had crunch, chocolate chip organic bars for organic snack.
We took lots of photographs since it was the first day back.
Ms. Guru Sajan taught a mythological creatures class at 4:15.
Ms. Barbara taught sense of belonging. The class is based on our theme of the month, Belonging, and we used scents to enhance the lesson.
Since Ms. Tropical Storm Fay has decided to grace us with her presence we have followed her demand and closed schools and the center for Tuesday!
A beginning of the school year blessed with fresh rain, new friendships and great opportunities!
